RECIPE: Lobster

Live lobsters from the shore (not Jersey)

Live Lobsters

my mom named this one Mr. Lobster

1. Boil the water
2. Melt the butter and squeeze in lemon

cut up the lemon

3. Add live lobster to boiling water until the shells are a nice bright red.

yummy lobsters

Being a Boston girl, my mom said I should know how to crack my own lobster so I gave it a shot. First you flip it upside down so that the stomach part is up, then you run a knife from the neck (??) to the tail. Then crack on either side of the tail to help crack the shell, then pull out the tail intact if you can (it takes mad skills!). Then crack the claws for the rest of the meat. yea, can you believe it? for how expensive a freaking lobster is, about only 20% of it is edible lobster meat.

check out those skills!!!

the front

I had never been to this area before but this restaurant had rave reviews online and my man needed some clam chowder before he finished his Boston trip.  We got here early for lunch, it was nice! No one else was there. But in the time it took me to scan the menu,a long line had formed behind me which worried me that we wouldn’t find a table (not much space in this joint but the free parking is a definite plus).

the goods

the menu

Lots of choices and the selection looked fresh!

clam chowder

My friend and Joe had the clam chowder which they both said was good. When I sampled some, it was on the watery side for me.

lobster bisque

The lobster bisque was amazing! It was silky and yet there were 4 intact lobster claws in my bowl! The flavors really stood out and I felt bad for hogging it so I gave Joe 2 of the lobster claws.

crabcake sandwich

My friend had the crabcake sandwich. Looked good!

crab roll

lobster roll

These rolls were so money. So much crustacean meat between these two buns. The meats didn’t have too much flavor but the amount of meat was impressive for mid-December. Very generous meat proportions! If you can swing by here for some lobster bisque and lobster roll, you’re in for a treat!

This is a seafood staple in Chinatown. For $10 you get a ton of clams cooked in a flavorful black bean sauce. This dish came out shortly after we had placed our order. I was really surprised given how packed this restaurant was. When we walked in, the hostess asked us if we had made a reservation (we were thinking, who makes a reservation for a chinese restaurant in Chinatown!?!)

clams in black bean sauce

The soft shell crab is fried in a spicy salt. This was probably my favorite dish of the night, but the portion was quite small. It was really delicious though.

I always try to get beef chow fun at Chinese restaurants and this one was pretty standard for a beef chow fun. Nothing spectacular but not disgusting either.

beef chow fun

When we ordered the fried sea scallops, I was surprised to see that it was covered in batter and deep fried. This was probably the easiest, least-messy dish to eat for the night. Unfortunately, I mainly tasted the batter and not the scallops.

fried scallops

The lobster in ginger and scallion was pretty good. Very good portions. After we had placed our order, I saw a waiter walk over to the live lobster tank and pull out two and place them on a tray and walk to the kitchen. And this was probably the last dish to arrive at our table, probably because it was cooked fresh.
